Two hour bike tour of Green Stormwater Infrastructure along the Gay Lea Wilson Trail in Polk County and the City of Des Moines. The Ride starts at 4:30 pm

Join us Wednesday, Sept. 27 for a fun and informative guided bike ride along the Gay Lea Wilson Trail. Our guide will be John Swanson, Polk County Water Resource Supervisor. The event is hosted by the Des Moines Task Force on Sustainability, and cohosted by 1000 Friends of Iowa, the City of Des Moines and Polk County. The ride will be approximately 8 miles one way, starting at Mally Park Shelter in Berwick and ending at Copper Creek in Plesant Hills.

On the bike tour we will see and hear about green infrastructure projects along Four Mile Creek completed by Polk County, the City of Des Moines, and other communities to reduce flooding, improve water quality, and improve quality of life for area residents.

For several years, the Des Moines metro has been hit hard by floods. One of the best ways to deal with flooding is to restore our landscape so that it is better equipped to handle the water. Come on the tour to check out what Polk County and the City of Des Moines have been doing to restore the landscape with green stormwater infrastructure, such as wetlands, oxbow restoration, bioswales, rain gardens and much more!

This is an easy, flat, and shaded trail. The ride will be about 8 miles one way. If you cannot ride, we will have some locations that are accessible by car for you to join us. You can leave your vehicle at Mally's park and ride back at the end or leave it at the Pleasant Hill Trail Head near Copper Creek Mall and ride to the starting point. We will have the ability to shuttle a limited number of people back to their vehicles if needed.
